Description

This Brown Butter Apple Upside Down Cake is a delightful twist on a classic dessert. The rich, nutty flavor of brown butter pairs perfectly with the sweet, tart apples for a decadent treat that is sure to impress. The moist cake is topped with caramelized apples, creating a beautiful presentation that is as delicious as it looks.

Ingredients

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2-3 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

For the Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, browned
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Topping: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until the mixture is smooth. Pour the mixture into the bottom of a greased cake pan. Arrange the apple slices on top of the butter mixture.
  2. Make the Cake Batter: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, cream the browned butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla. Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk, and mix until just combined.
  3. Assemble the Cake: Pour the cake batter over the apples in the pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Finish and Serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a serving plate. Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • You can use any type of apple for this recipe, but Granny Smith apples work particularly well.
  • Be careful when working with the hot caramelized sugar to avoid burns.
