Description
Carmelitas are rich, chewy dessert bars made with layers of oats, chocolate, and gooey caramel, perfect for indulgent snacking or a sweet treat.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup caramel sauce (or melted soft caramels with cream)
- 2 tbsp heavy cream (if using caramels)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, flour, oats, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips.
- Pour caramel sauce evenly over the chocolate layer.
- Crumble the remaining oat mixture over the top of the caramel layer.
- Return to the oven and bake for another 15–18 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
- Cool completely before cutting into bars. Chill for cleaner cuts if desired.
Notes
- Use high-quality caramel for the best flavor.
- Chilling the bars before slicing helps them set better.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
