Description

Carmelitas are rich, chewy dessert bars made with layers of oats, chocolate, and gooey caramel, perfect for indulgent snacking or a sweet treat.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup caramel sauce (or melted soft caramels with cream)
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream (if using caramels)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, flour, oats, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips.
  5. Pour caramel sauce evenly over the chocolate layer.
  6. Crumble the remaining oat mixture over the top of the caramel layer.
  7. Return to the oven and bake for another 15–18 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
  8. Cool completely before cutting into bars. Chill for cleaner cuts if desired.

Notes

  • Use high-quality caramel for the best flavor.
  • Chilling the bars before slicing helps them set better.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
