Description

Delicious Salisbury steak meatballs smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy, perfect for a comforting dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  2. Form mixture into small meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onion and mushrooms until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the onion and mushroom mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Gradually stir in beef broth, ketchup, and Dijon mustard, scraping up any brown bits from the skillet.
  7. Return meatballs to the skillet and bring the gravy to a simmer. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through and gravy has thickened.
  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy.
