Description

Easy Overnight French Toast is a make-ahead breakfast casserole made with layers of bread soaked in a sweet egg custard and baked until golden. Perfect for holidays, brunches, or feeding a crowd with minimal morning prep.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and add cubed bread evenly into the dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down slightly to soak all pieces.
  4. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate overnight (or at least 6 hours).
  5. In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Let the casserole sit at room temperature while the oven heats.
  6. Drizzle melted butter over the top. Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes or until golden brown and set in the center.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving. Top with powdered sugar, syrup, or berries if desired.

Notes

  • Brioche or challah bread also work great for a richer texture.
  • Make it sweeter by adding a streusel topping before baking.
  • This can be prepped 1–2 days in advance for busy mornings.
