Description
Grilled Cheese Sloppy Joes combine the savory, saucy filling of a classic sloppy joe with the crispy, buttery bread and melty cheese of a grilled cheese sandwich. It’s a delicious mash-up that’s perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices sandwich bread
- 8 slices cheddar cheese
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and chopped onion until beef is browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.
- Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the beef. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
- Place 4 slices of bread, buttered side down, in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Top each with 1 slice of cheese, a scoop of sloppy joe mixture, another slice of cheese, and another slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Cook until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side, pressing slightly with a spatula.
- Repeat with remaining ingredients. Serve hot.
Notes
- Use American or pepper jack cheese for variation.
- Try with Texas toast or sourdough for extra crunch.
- Can be made with ground turkey or plant-based meat as a substitute.
