Description

Instant Pot Split Pea Soup is a hearty and comforting dish made with dried split peas, vegetables, and savory herbs, all cooked quickly in the pressure cooker. It’s rich, creamy, and perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pound dried green split peas, rinsed
  • 6 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1 cup diced ham (optional)

Instructions

  1. Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Heat olive oil, then add onion and garlic. Cook for 2–3 minutes until softened.
  2. Add carrots and celery. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in thyme, salt, pepper, and bay leaf.
  4. Add rinsed split peas, broth, and ham if using. Stir well.
  5. Seal the lid and cook on high pressure for 15 minutes.
  6. Allow natural pressure release for 10 minutes, then manually release any remaining pressure.
  7. Remove the bay leaf. Stir and mash slightly if desired for a creamier texture.
  8. Serve hot with crusty bread or croutons.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit ham and use vegetable broth.
  • Soup thickens as it sits—add water or broth when reheating.
  • Freezes well for up to 3 months in airtight containers.
