Description

A flavorful Mongolian chicken dish with a sweet and savory sauce, served over rice or noodles for a delicious meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken breast, sliced into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced chicken and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add garlic and ginger and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, water, and cornstarch.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and bring to a simmer. Cook for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, ensuring the chicken is fully coated and heated through.
  6. Stir in sesame oil and red pepper flakes (if using). Adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. Serve the Mongolian chicken over cooked rice or noodles, and garnish with chopped green onions.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or broccoli to the dish.
  • Adjust the level of sweetness or spice by adding more brown sugar or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • If you prefer, you can use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts for a juicier texture.
