Description

Perfect Homemade Stuffing is a savory and comforting side dish made with toasted bread cubes, aromatic vegetables, herbs, and a rich broth. It’s an essential addition to any holiday meal or family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (about 1 lb) day-old French or Italian bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C). Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until dry and crisp. Let cool. Increase oven temperature to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion and celery, and cook until softened, about 8 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  3. Stir in sage, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
  4. In a large bowl, combine toasted bread cubes with the cooked vegetable mixture. Add broth gradually, tossing until bread is moistened but not soggy.
  5. Stir in beaten eggs and fresh parsley, if using. Mix well.
  6. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Serve hot as a side dish.

Notes

  • Use a mix of white and whole wheat bread for added texture and flavor.
  • Prepare up to 1 day ahead and bake before serving.
  • Add cooked sausage, mushrooms, or apples for variations.
