Description

Pan de Mallorca is a soft, fluffy, and sweet Puerto Rican bread, often enjoyed as a breakfast treat. It has a slightly sweet flavor with a light, airy texture, making it perfect for pairing with coffee or used in sandwiches.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a separate large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them in the prepared pan.
  8. Cover the pan and let the dough rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Pan de Mallorca is typically served with coffee or hot chocolate in Puerto Rico.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, you can substitute milk with buttermilk.
  • For extra sweetness, you can also glaze the bread with a simple sugar syrup after baking.
